Energy Minister Pete Hodgson today said the study showed that “New Zealanders overwhelmingly support wind energy and hydro electricity”.
Some 82% of respondents to the study approved or strongly approved of wind power, while hydro generation was the next most preferred option with 79%, and geothermal third with 67% support.
"Not only does this report show very strong support for wind developments overall, it indicates low levels of the 'not in my back yard' syndrome. Only nine per cent did not want them even if they could not see or hear them,” Hodgson said.
Wind power is already set to grow fourfold from around 40MW to 160MW in the year to April, due to the government's Projects to Reduce Emissions programme that awards proposed wind farms carbon credits.
